entire life. Hot tears coursed down her cheeks as she tried to wriggle
out of her bonds. Everything happened so fast. She felt so brave
slipping into the water and swimming downstream. She wanted to get
a bit of a head start on the twins, but to be honest she didn’t really
want to get too far ahead. So she swam around the bend, just out of
sight and then crawled out of the river. Soaking wet would slow her
down some, but perhaps she wouldn’t be wearing these clothes too
long. She managed to crawl over the rock and looked over her
shoulder expecting to see one of them on the other side of the river.
Turning back, she came face-to-face with a large man she wished she
didn’t recognize.
“Well, this is convenient.”
She never had time to scream before the world turned black.
When she came to, Mai thought she might be dead. She couldn’t
see anything, but slowly her senses came back to her. She could smell
exhaust and something rattled around behind her. Oh please, don’t let
it be a body. Raising her wrists to her mouth she tried to bite at her
restraints. It felt like a plastic tie held her hands together, and her
ankles must be bound the same way. So much for Gaspar’s idea.
Perhaps if they didn’t see her as such a threat, they wouldn’t have
secured her to well.
Voices argued inside the car, but she couldn’t make out what they
were saying. Okay, be quiet, but don’t just lay here. Mai remember
reading once about a woman who was trapped in a trunk. She broke
the back light out and waved down help. Anything would be better

than lying here waiting to find out her fate. If she lay there any longer,
she would end up lost in a panic attack of grand mal proportions.
Mai carefully slid herself to the trunk and felt around with her
hands, only feeling carpeting beneath her fingers. Following the edge
she tried to pick at the material and pull it off the frame. Her fingers
ached, and she bent back almost every nail before she gave up.
Closing her eyes, she tried to envision her men and wished she could
see them. She had to believe they would come for her, but how would
they find her?
Fear and panic pushed at her thoughts. Gaspar, Vencel, where are
you? She curled up and tried to think of them and not panic. The
harder she thought about them, the more she could feel them with her.
Please help. A warmth lay over her troubled thoughts like a blanket.
She could almost feel them stroking her hair and her back, reassuring
her that they were coming. She lay still and didn’t move for fear of
losing the sensation. Even if this was all in her imagination, she didn’t
want to lose it.
The car turned and bounced down a side road that felt worse than
the one leading to their home. It jarred her, and she lost the
connection to them. At least now she felt a bit better and not as
panicked. The car stopped, and she heard car doors opening. Two
slams shuddered through the vehicle. So she was about to face at least
two people, one of them the jerk who took her. Despite her attempts
to look strong, hot tears escaped and trailed into her ear. Footsteps
walked along the edge of the car, while the other sounded like it
moved away. A key in the lock and then the truck lid lifted. Sunlight
streamed in as did the fresh air. Mai breathed deep before looking up
into the face of her kidnapper. It was the same man who grabbed her
on the river’s edge.
“Please let me go.” A shiver racked her body. The cool breeze
over her wet clothes didn’t help.
“I’m sorry. I can’t.” He gripped Mai by the shoulders and flipped
her over his shoulder and then headed into the house.

“All secure.” Another male voice had Mai lifting her head, but she
didn’t recognize this man. He looked at her with a curiosity that made
Mai nervous. As long as they thought of her as a dirty human, she
didn’t have to worry about them touching her. She glared at him and
gave him her filthiest look. “They will kill you both for what you are
doing.”
All emotion drained from his gaze. “They will try.”
He carried her into a small cottage and dropped onto a soft bed.
The man flicked open a large knife, and Mai scrambled back away
from him. “I’m not going to cut you. You won’t need these anymore.”
He pinned her arms down and ran the knife’s edge along the plastic
tie, repeating he process with her ankles. Mai immediately started to
rub the abrasions on her skin. They stung, but not as bad as she
expected.
“Bathroom is there.” He pointed to a small door to the left. “Stay
here, and please don’t do anything that will make me hurt you.” He
got up and stalked out of the room. Mai slipped from the bed and
immediately moved over to the door and tried the handle. It turned,
but the door wouldn’t open. They must have locked it from the other
side. Next she tried the only window, but it looked to be painted shut.
Fear hammered at her again as she moved over to sit on the bed. For a
moment she thought about getting out of her wet clothes, but what
good would that do her? The last thing she wanted was for one of
them to come in while she stood there in nothing but a sheet.
She checked out the bathroom. It was clean and had a supply of
fresh towels. She thought that perhaps she could lock herself in there,
but the door didn’t have a lock, and there was nothing in the medicine
cabinet either. No mirror to smash and only a small vent in the
ceiling. If she stepped on the sink, she might be able to reach it, but
she would never be able to squeeze out.
One thing was for certain—she wasn’t going to sit here and wait
to be killed.

Vencel shot up the drive to the large A-frame house that the
Hungarian wolves had rented. A Mercedes sat outside the building,
but there weren’t any other vehicles. Gaspar has the door open and
already jumped out before Vencel completely stopped. [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
